Wedding Stationery Tips and Advice from White Crafts

As wedding planners, Oh So Perfect work hard to bring our clients the best advice possible to help make planning a wedding an enjoyable, stress-free experience for all our couples.

We invited Wales-based wedding stationery designer, Kelly White of White Crafts to appear as a guest writer on the Oh So Perfect blog, to offer our readers an insight into what to think about when choosing your wedding stationery and sending your invites. Here Kelly gives her tips and advice to help you on your way…

There are a number of aspects to take in to consideration when ordering your wedding invitations, here are a few helpful tips to help you on your way to STRESS FREE wedding stationery delights!

Number of Invitations

Before you even begin to look at designs, colours, lay out of invitations make sure you know how many you need! Remember 100 guests will mean approximately 50 invitations, as many will be couples or families who only require 1 invite. This is only a rough guide and it’s well worth the time sitting down and going through the list properly with your partner to get a precise number.

Style of Wedding

Is your wedding a formal affair, sticking to all the traditions? Are you taking a modern twist on some of the old favourites? Are you heading for an informal relaxed celebration? Whatever you decide, your invitations/save the dates are the very first encounter your guests have with your wedding. They set the scene for what your guests can expect on the day itself, and have the power of determine dress choices (especially colour) and whether or not your guests will make the effort to attend.

Who’s inviting Who?

Sit down and talk openly about whom will be hosting (inviting people) to the wedding. Traditionally the Brides parents invite guests to the marriage of their daughter, but with more and more Brides and Grooms paying for their own weddings or multiple parties contributing then who’s name goes on the invitation can become a taboo subject, if not approached head on! There are many different wording options that can include everyone, so if you find yourself lost just ask your wedding stationer for help.

Names

You have to think not only about the Bride and Groom’s names here. For example, do you want to include middle names or even surnames? Whose name is first? I could go on… but you’d probably stop reading. You also need to consider how you’re going to display your guests’ names. Some choose not to include names on their invitations. In my experience I personally would always recommend stating exactly who is invited and more importantly who isn’t!! You don’t want to be in a situation on the day where you assumed Auntie Sue & Uncle Pete are coming to the wedding but their 24 year old son with his new girl aren’t, only for them all to turn up on the day with nowhere to sit, and nothing to eat. Awkward! Better to make it clear from the very beginning whom is and isn’t invited.

RSVP

It’s always a good idea to include an RSVP to ensure you get your responses in the time frame you want, including all the information you need. Always check with your venue when they need your final confirmed numbers, and how many vegetarians, vegans, gluten free, allergies etc. meals you require. This way you can make sure you ask your guests for their responses in a reasonable time, plus a little extra for you chase any one slacking.

Gifts

I have this question A LOT, ‘we’ve lived together for years, and we have everything we need, so is it cheeky to just ask for money?’ This is completely personal to you. In my experience, approximately 1 in 50 weddings have a traditional gift list, all the others ask for money contributions towards home improvements, or the honeymoon. There are polite ways of doing this, but remember your guests will bring you something. They’ll want to give you something. If you don’t tell them what you want, you face the awkwardness of having three kettles, towels that don’t match your bathroom, and a toaster you don’t need. Whether you choose money, a gift list, charitable donations in lieu of gifts, or strictly no gifts at all, you have to give your guests this information.

Your day!

Above all, remember it’s YOUR WEDDING. There are no rights or wrongs, I can tell you the traditions but in the end it is up to you and your partner what you want to include and don’t want to include. Happy Planning!

Magic Steps Dance Party Specialists

Oh So Perfect recently had the pleasure of  meeting professional dance company, Magic Steps.

Dedicated to helping couples prepare those special moves for their first dance, and providing Hens across the country with a unique party to remember, Magic Steps also had the recent honour of choreographing Emmerdale’s 2011 “Marlon and Paddy’s Big Night In” DVD!

First established 6 years ago, in Leeds, Magic Steps now cover the whole of the UK. Professional dancer and choreographer, Zoe, is here to tell you a little bit more about the company…

Magic Steps provide unforgettable dance experiences for your hen weekend or first dance.

A dance experience is a unique and exciting  idea and a great way to start your Hen weekend. Its a fabulous way for all your Hens to get to know each other and get whipped into a sexy dance troupe. You will learn a personalised routine, anything from Dirty Dancing to Thriller, that you will want to perform again and again, maybe even at the wedding!

Our dance classes are designed to suit the absolute beginner so there is no need to worry if you have two left feet. The idea is to have fun and a giggle with the girls.

We also provide first dance lessons for couples, whether they just want to avoid the awkward shuffle on the dance floor or they want to truly dazzle their guests. Our patient dance instructors will even travel to the couple’s home and take care of everything, giving them the confidence to enjoy their first dance as husband and wife.

Our wedding dance lessons will suit any Bride and Groom; from the Traditional Waltz to the Vintage inspired 50’s wedding dance or even the slightly crazy Thriller routine, our Dance experinces are really dynamic and would suit any bride.

Glamorous, fun and exciting – we go the extra mile to ensure our clients get the very best!

Zoe graduated with a Diploma in Musical Theatre. Whilst at college she trained in ballet, tap, modern and ballroom. Upon graduating, Zoe gained her first job as a production dancer on-board Carnival cruise lines. She then went on to join a world tour with pop sensation, Lemar, before spending 6 months living in India working on a Bollywood movie.  On returning to London, Zoe has worked as an Assistant Director and Choreographer for ITV ‘Emmerdale’, ‘Come Rain Come Shine’, BBC’s ‘Comic Relief’ and Channel 4s ‘Big Brother’…

I saw a gap in the market after my Aunty came to me in a panic before her wedding day. Her and my uncle certainly have two left feet, so I whipped up a perfect routine for their first dance. I created Magic Steps with my partner Steven to help other couples in need of  little help before their big day.  In the past 5 years dance has become more and more popular due to shows such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, ‘Got To Dance’ and ‘Pineapple Studios’.

Wedding dance lessons have become a ‘must have’ as everyone now wants to look thieir best on their wedding day and Hen dance parties has really seen the same effect as one of the most popular choices for a daytime hen activity. We now have over 200 amazing instructors nationwide and offer over 30 different party themes.

Zoe’s partner, Steven, graduated from The Royal Academy of Music London. Upon returning to London, Steven played “Peter” in ‘Company’ and “Jinx” in ‘Forever Plaid’ . He then played “Nick” in the Europen Tour of ‘Fame’. Steven has just recently finished playing Take That’s Howard Donald in UK tour ‘Back for Good’.

Together we have been running Magic Steps full time for five years and love working with each individual couple. Each couple’s requirements are completely different so no two days in the dance studio are ever the same!!

One amazing booking we had – the Bride and groom contacted us as they wanted an elaborate show stopping dance routine and wanted proffessioanal street dancers to join them on stage. They wanted to do this as a complete surprise for their guests. What they didnt know, however, was that the cheif bridesmaid had already contacted us to learn a surprise dance routine for the Bride and Groom! With a lot of work we pulled it off and both parties were completely surprised.

We also had a bride that was so self concious with her body after giving birth to her two sons she has decided she was not even going to wear a wedding dress, let alone perform a first dance. However, after the third lesson of the dance package booked by her partner, she confided in me that thanks to having these lessons in the comfort of her own home she felt inspired and confident and had decided to go and buy the wedding dress that she never dared buy.
