In our final supplier interview of 2011, and arguably one of our favourites to date, we caught up with Jill Hatton from mother and daughter business Port Out Starboard Home (P-O-S-H) – handcrafted unique hair accessories from vintage components…

Hi Jill, thank you for taking the time to talk to us before Christmas! Please can you tell our Oh So Perfect clients and followers a little bit more about P-O-S-H

We handcraft glamorous and unique hair accessories for weddings and special occasions mainly using vintage components.

We use vintage jewellery in our designs, such as brooches, necklaces and earrings and give them new life. We may come across a single crystal earring or a brooch with a broken clasp or missing crystal. We love being able to repair the items and giving them a new lease of life.

We use gold and silver metal combs and hairbands and frequently cover them with satin ribbon in white, ivory or in the colour requested.

We are constantly searching for special pieces we feel will make a beautiful and unique headband or comb. We also often incorporate raw silk, brocade, satin, vintage lace and feathers in our designs.

Are all your items made to order?

We have a ready to wear range shown on our website and also offer a bespoke service. We very much enjoy making to order and perhaps using an article in the design which has family sentimental value.

Our selection of hair accessories will suit any type of wedding theme or a special occasion and can be adapted or made to meet exact requirements.  Our brides tell us that they are looking for something unique and a different. They enjoy having the opportunity to discuss their needs with us and have a bespoke headdress designed specifically for them. They also love the idea of being able to incorporate a family sentimental piece into the design.

You recycle, or ‘upcycle’ pieces which in some cases may be very old or even slightly broken, do you operate any sort of quality control on your finished pieces?

All our items are carefully checked to ensure the stones and fittings are secure. Having a neat underside without wires and fixings showing is important to us and is as important as the side that shows. We finish each item with felt and/or ribbon to ensure a comfortable fit and neat finish. If we are unhappy with the design or finish we unpick it and start again!

Can you give us an example of one of the bridal pieces you’re currently working on?

As an illustration, we are working with Kirsty from Warminster who has asked for a vintage purple themed hairband for herself and five bridesmaids. They will all wear designs made from purple crystal vintage brooches to match her colour scheme. We have designed each headdress to be individual and will coordinate perfectly with the theme. It is always a challenge finding suitable pieces for special commissions, but great fun searching vintage shops and markets for the ideal item.

Another bride has asked us to add a birdcage veil to her raw silk bow and also to make a bespoke headdress for her mum who did not want a traditional hat or fascinator.

‘Vintage’ is a very popular style choice amongst brides at the moment, what sort of bride do you think P-O-S-H most appeals to?

This is a difficult question, as all brides and grooms are individuals and it is difficult to generalise who we appeal to. We believe we appeal to those who appreciate a high quality, handcrafted and unique hair accessory with a vintage feel which stands out as being different for their special day. Our bespoke service is popular for those with specific themes and colours.

We also appeal to those who like to re-use or up-cycle previously used items from a different era or are looking for a headdress for a special era such as 1940s or 1950s.

Do you receive a lot of business outside of the wedding industry too?

We offer a versatile and wide range of hair accessories, with choices for brides, bridesmaids, flower girls and other ladies who are attending a wedding or special occasion but many of our accessories are great for also wearing to proms, balls, parties or just to add a bit of sparkle or interest to an outfit.

In September this year, one of our vintage hair bands was worn in a scene in the filming of a prominent BBC TV series, details of which are still top secret!

Oooh! You can’t leave us hanging like that! Go on, tell us more…!

[Laughs] I’m sorry I can’t!  But we do expect wide media coverage and interest once this has been screened… We are so looking forward to being able to tell everyone! I believe it’s without a doubt P-O-S-H’s proudest moment so far!

Hmm… OK we won’t push… We’ll be on the look out though! 

[Laughs] Another proud occasion was when we were asked to produce a headdress for an exhibitor at the Portobello Film Festival. She wore her military themed headband to the premiere.

Wow you are popular amongst the stars! Can you tell our readers a bit more about the business – where are you based and how long has P-O-S-H been established?

Our business was officially launched in September 2011 but we have been taking commissions for some years before then, we have been making jewellery and hair accessories as a hobby for about 15 years.

I’m based in Bristol and Georgie in Surrey. We are happy to travel to meet clients within a 30 mile radius and of course are able to discuss requirements on the phone or via email or Skype.

P-O-S-H is run by you together with your daughter Georgie, how did you get started working together on the business?

We were inspired to launch Port Out Starboard Home (P-O-S-H) after Georgie’s wedding. We had an idea of the special hair accessories we wanted for that occasion, but found that the choice was very limited. Georgie decided to design and make her own headband from items in granny’s jewellery box.

The headband was a huge success and the business idea was born! We started in a very small way as we both had full time jobs, but when I took early retirement in July 2011, it seemed an ideal opportunity to launch our business. P-O-S-H has blossomed from there!

Such a lovely story! But surely you must come across difficulties from time to time, having a mother/daughter relationship and working together at the same time? 

At the outset we agreed to be open and honest with each other and agreed not to take any criticism personally and this has worked well for us. We both want to achieve the same goal of providing a beautiful hair accessory which will be loved and  an heirloom of the future.

Having a great rapport is important to us; we each have our own areas of responsibility which helps the business and our relationship run smoothly.  We communicate every day and the fact that I live in Bristol and Georgie in Surrey poses no problem for us. We manage to meet up at least once a month to catch up and this works very well for us.

We thoroughly enjoy working together in such a fantastic business!

And what do you both do when you’re not working on a P-O-S-H project?

I manage all the administration and website for the business and am enjoying having more time now I am not working in and office, to walk and swim most days.  Georgie is a full time secondary school teacher and is enjoying refurbishing her new home and garden.

We both enjoy vintage events, particularly the annual Goodwood Revival meeting where we dress in 1950s clothing and hats. We have a close family and like nothing more than meeting up to catch up over a good meal and a bottle of wine!

Vintage fashion is obviously something which you both take an active interest in even outside of the business, where do you feel you draw most of your inspiration from when designing a new piece?

We study historical hair accessories and fashion and also draw inspiration directly from the vintage pieces we find in England, France, Germany and Austria, where we have family connections.  Our designs usually start by using items from the wide selection of jewellery we have. We study the pieces and make rough samples. We then keep revisiting the example until we have a design we like and which will work well.

Some pieces are just beautiful on a headband or comb by themselves, while other smaller pieces benefit from being grouped together. We also may add pearls and crystals to some designs to enhance a vintage piece.

We also use the same process when making bespoke items. We make samples for our clients after discussing their requirements and then will agree the final design. If we don’t have the exact item, then we will search for it until we find it.

Have either of you had any specific training or gained any qualifications relevant to jewellery making or is this something which has been born out of practise?

We have a wide background in dressmaking and design. I had a successful craft business in the days of patchwork in the late 1970s, which unfortunately had to stop when the family were posted abroad. I have continued to be interested in all aspects of craft work and enjoyed jewellery making and craft as a hobby.

Georgie has a degree in the History of Art and Design and works as a technology and graphics teacher. She has wide experience of making jewellery and has taught jewellery making to both children and adult classes.

We have also both enjoyed a wide range of training courses in jewellery making and millinery.

You’re both clearly very skilled, and it shows in the range of different pieces, they’re beautiful! Have you had any favourite pieces so far (apart from that top secret BBC commision of course!!) ?

Every client is special to us and we enjoy working on our ready to wear range and also all our bespoke commissions.  We enjoyed working with Jess who got married last summer in Las Vegas, she had a Greek themed wedding and after discussions and planning we came up with the look she was searching for.

What do you think makes you stand out from other businesses who sell vintage or upcycled jewellery and accessories?

We understand the importance of having everything just right for weddings and special occasions and to provide excellent value for money.  We offer a personal service and are willing to travel to meet with clients in and around Bristol and Surrey as we realise that our brides are very busy people and time is precious.

All our pieces are unique and are carefully made to the highest quality. Also, our packaging and stationery is made from recycled materials and postage and packing is free in UK on ready to wear and bespoke orders.

You really do adore your job don’t you! P-O-S-H certainly strikes us as being your passion before anything else….

We love working in the wedding industry and having the opportunity to play a key part in our clients’ wedding day. We enjoy meeting brides and their female party members and being able to make them exactly what they are looking for.

It is a fantastic feeling when someone says “that’s perfect, thank you so much.” We thoroughly enjoy the part we play in this memorable occasion and are very aware of the importance and impact of what we do.

It’s been a pleasure talking to you, Jill, but before you leave us for Christmas, tell us finally, what do you think makes a wedding Oh So  Perfect…?

I believe to make a wedding Oh So Perfect it is vital that every detail is designed, planned and organised effectively. Every tiny detail should be considered carefully to ensure that the preparation and day runs smoothly to create a memorable day where the bride and groom and guests have a wonderful time. Finally and perhaps most importantly, I believe a budget should be set and agreed to .

I did not set out to start a business, I have always enjoyed making and decorating cakes for my children, friends and family members, when friends of friends started asking for cakes, it evolved into a business.

It all started with my eldest son’s first birthday cake, he’s now 32! I had no formal training, it’s all practice and passion.

I consider myself very lucky, to be able to do what I love for a living , despite the very long hours, I would not swap it for the world.

And 32 years since that first birthday cake, Dilly Daydream has grown into a massive success, with Heather adoring every moment spent in the busy bakery.

Weddings are just the icing on the cake, if you pardon the pun, nothing beats the feeling of seeing  the cake you have worked so hard on , set up at the venue. Except maybe the thank you card from the delighted bride, some of which have reduced me to tears.

With over 10 years of experience producing documentries for the BBC, Sally and Emma are the creative duo at the front of Wales’s best wedding film company, providing couples across the UK with “amazing wedding videos which couldn’t be more different from the traditional concept of a wedding video!”

Oh So Perfect are absolutely delighted to bring you an exclusive interview with Sally Davies of  – the award winning – Orchid Films

Hi Sally, it’s a pleasure catching up with you. First of all, a massive congratulations to you for your recent win at the Welsh National Wedding Awards…!

Thank you! We’re delighted to say we’ve just won ‘Best Wedding Videographer in Wales 2011’ in the very first  Welsh National Wedding Awards. As we’ve only been in business for three years it was a real thrill for our work to be recognised.

Winning the Best Videographer in Wales was a real highlight for us, and we were touched by how many of our couples got in touch to congratulate us.

I bet! So tell us a bit about what makes you a worthy, award-winning team… 

Our films are very different from the traditional 2 hour “music and pictures” wedding video. You hear as well as see what happens, which really brings the day to life, and the films are about 40 minutes long so tell the story of the day in a concise but moving way.

Every wedding and couple are so different and we really get into all the detail and planning that’s gone into them, and reflect that in the films.   We are also friendly outgoing people who relate well to others.  And as we’ve both organised our own weddings we know all about the effort that goes into it.

You won the award for Best in Wales, but you do Orchid Films operate outside of Wales too?

We are based in Cardiff but cover the whole of the UK.  We’ve filmed weddings all over England and Wales as well as three in Jersey and have a booking for Scotland in 2012.

If the wedding’s outside south Wales we ask for travel costs, but don’t charge for the time spent travelling.

How would you describe the style of your videos?

They’re shot in a documentary style with sound, so very much tell the story of the day, but have a cinematic look so are beautiful too.  They’re about 40 minutes long and some clients say it’s like watching a TV programme about their wedding.

And we’ve heard you have another style which is popular too…?

Yes, we are also Marryoke specialists, and offer a music video independently of a wedding film which is a very popular choice.  About a third of our bookings are for a Marryoke on its own without the main video.

Sounds like fun! What sort of style of wedding do you feel Orchid Films is most suited to? 

We film what happens and never ask anyone to do anything especially for the camera so our coverage suits any style of wedding.

However, we do like to meet our clients and get to know them, to find out what kind of a couple they are – e.g romantic/fun/stylish as that influences the way we edit their film.

Can you edit the couple’s film to compliment the theme too?

We can, we personalise the film by using the same font on the DVD as on their order of service or seating plan, and reflecting their colour scheme on the DVD.  And of course the choice of music for the video is down to the couple.

That’s a good idea. What kind of couple do you think Orchid Films mostly appeals to?

A discerning couple who recognise a professional film when they see one!  So many of our couples have said they weren’t going to have a video until they saw ours, because they are so different to the traditional wedding video and more like a TV programme.

What advice would you give to a couple on a budget, who were perhaps thinking about whether to hire a videographer or a photographer?

If you’re in two minds about having a video, just ask yourself how you will remember your day afterwards.  Once the day’s over, all that’s left of everything you paid for will be the photos and although they’re important nothing compares with actually seeing and hearing the day’s events.

We’ve spoken to couples before who felt that their videographer sometimes appeared as a distraction to the guests. How do you tackle this issue? 

It’s important to us to be discreet and to dress to blend in.  Couples often say afterwards they hardly noticed we were there!

And we’ve seen you in action too, at a wedding in Margam Park! It was amazing to see how well you could communicate with each other across a room without any sound, just subtle signals. You’re experience working in TV must help you in that respect?

Yes, we both have more than ten years’ experience producing documentaries for the BBC – that’s where we learned our trade.

Since starting Orchid Films three years ago we’ve been on extra editing and colour grading courses, and in June 2011 spent three days at a camera masterclass led by Philip Bloom, recognised world wide as an expert on the new generation of DSLR video.

So tell us, what inspired you to move on from the BBC and into wedding videography?

Emma was planning her own wedding and was in despair about a videographer after seeing dozens of samples.  As a TV producer/director she was looking for something like a documentary about her day that was beautifully filmed.

She suggested to me (a fellow film maker who’d recently left the BBC) that we should go into business – and thus Orchid Films was born!

And three years later, you must know the industry very well. What attracts you specifically to working in weddings?

We both love weddings, and recognise it’s a real privilege to be asked to record them.  For example, when you’re filming the bride as she’s getting into her dress, it’s a very intimate moment and yet you’re there along with her mother and closest friends.

Are there any weddings you have filmed which have  particularly stood out in your memory?

Every wedding is so different, we come away with memorable moments from each one.   A particular one we’ll always remember was Ian and Emma in our first year.  They only booked us three days before their wedding which would have been memorable enough.  But on the day – in June after a week of beautiful sunshine – there was torrential rain all day.  The bride arrived at the church in wellies, and guests were delayed getting to the reception because floods had shut the road en route!

Oh no!

It was a wonderful day in spite of the weather though!

Oh, and another one – our first civil ceremony when Andy and Darren officially became a couple at Portmeirion was one of the most emotional days we’ve filmed.

Any ‘Bridezillas’…?

Despite all the warnings about Bridezillas, in more than 60 weddings we haven’t met one yet!  All our couples have been really lovely, and quite a few of them have kept in touch with us.

You’ve worked alongside wedding planners and on the day coordinators, what do you think makes a wedding Oh So Perfect?

Once the day arrives, the bride and groom should just relax and really enjoy the day whatever it brings, and not worry even if things don’t go as planned.

It’s also a good idea to get help with the wedding and not do everything yourselves as by the time the big day dawns, you’ll be too exhausted to enjoy it!

We certainly agreed with that! And finally, Sally, how would you describe Orchid Films in three words?

Down For The Count

This week we’ve been catching up with pianist Mike Paul-Smith from 9-piece live band Down For The Count

Hi Mike! Welcome to the Oh So Perfect blog, please can you start off by telling us a little bit more about your rather superb band, Down For The Count…?

Hello! We are a 9-piece function band who perform jazz, swing, Rat Pack, soul and Motown music for weddings and corporate events all over the country. We have a large, diverse repertoire, which appeals to all generations and is fantastic for getting people up and dancing.

Wow, 9 live musicians?!  Your clients must require a large venue to be able to accommodate all of you?

Not at all, in addition to our 9-piece band, we also offer smaller function band line ups, small jazz bands for background music (i.e. during dinner or drinks receptions), musicians to perform classical or contemporary music for wedding ceremonies (i.e. a pianist, organist, cellist, trumpeter, singer) and we can use our PA and lighting system for a disco after the band’s performance.  In other words, we can create tailor-made wedding packages, providing all the music a couple needs on their special day.

So there really is something for everyone?

Yes, we can adapt to any style of wedding, as we have a broad repertoire drawing from many styles of music. We have a range of jump jive repertoire, perfect for vintage weddings; a huge range of ballroom music, perfect for couples who love dancing; and a lot more besides!

What sort of couple do you think you’d most likely appeal to?

Ones who appreciate live music, and who realise that a DJ or a solo singer performing to backing tracks, whilst effective, doesn’t have the stage presence and ‘wow factor’ of a 9-piece band.

We’ve seen a couple of videos on your website and you certainly do have the ‘wow’ factor. How would you describe the band in three words…?

I’m never very good at this question…. Versatile, sophisticated, unforgettable.

Ha! That’s a good answer for someone who’s not good at that question! So tell us a bit about your band mates, where are you all from and how did you meet? 

It actually started by accident!  We are first and foremost a group of friends, drawn together through a passion for music.  We played together in a show in Buckinghamshire in 2005, started getting some local gigs for relative’s birthday parties, and it all grew from there!

We have all been playing music since a young age, with examinations, degrees and/or diplomas in music.  We trained around the country, and all have extensive performing experience with other ensembles.

And now you’ve expanded from birthdays to weddings too…

We have performed at well over 100 weddings – we love weddings! – particularly the atmosphere, the wonderful locations and the knowledge that we are playing a key part in making someone’s day special.

6 years later, and you seem to be growing more popular by the day…

Absolutely!  We are with Alive Network, the largest entertainment booking agency in the world, and are listed on their website as the third most popular swing band and fourth most popular soul band.

That’s incredible, congratulations! You’ve achieved so much in such a short time…

Thanks! The band has the perfect blend of youth and experience, with members having performed alongside artists as diverse as Elton John, Russell Watson, KT Tunstall, Michael Ball, Marti Pellow, Suzi Quatro, Il Divo, Barbara Windsor, Stan Sulzmann, Pete Long, Norma Winstone and Frank Ricotti – to name just a few!

Just a few! So will we still catch you around Buckinghamshire predominantly?

We are now based in North London (Crouch End) but we cover the whole country – although we normally require accommodation for events more than 120 miles from N8 9LP.

Do you require your clients to provide you with the accommodation for weddings and events beyond 120 miles? 

We politely ask that the client either arrange this at their own expense, or we are happy to look for and book accommodation – normally in a Travelodge! – and include the cost in the original quotation.

What do you think makes you stand out from other bands similar to Down For The Count – why should an Oh So Perfect couple choose you for their wedding?

Well, we offer:

  • Personalised service – we treat every event separately, listening to a client’s needs and being flexible to meet them.
  • A huge repertoire of music, that is appreciated by people of all ages.  A sample quote from a client: ‘you got all ages on the dancefloor, from age four to ninety!’
  • The ability to provide ceremony music, background jazz music, a function band for dancing, and a disco – covering all the musical aspects of the day.
  • Fantastic feedback from clients, with endorsements from the country’s largest booking agencies.
  • A regular line-up of quality musicians.  Many function bands change musicians all the time (and in fact, many have ‘A’ and ‘B’ line-ups so they can accept more bookings!)  We never do this, our musicians are usually the same from event to event.

OK,  you’ve convinced us! So finally, tell our followers this: What do you think makes a wedding Oh So Perfect?

We’re biased – but we think it’s fantastic, live music throughout the day – from top quality music for the wedding ceremony all the way through to fantastic dancing music to finish off the evening!

WEDDINGS… the preparation priorities used to be finding the perfect dress, the best hair stylist, and the right makeup. But today’s brides and their bridesmaids have added another “must do” before the “I dos” – getting into the best physical shape of their lives!

Today, a wedding is probably one of the most motivating events in a woman’s life  that will help the bride and bridesmaids to achieve their perfect body shape and weight.

But ladies, fear not! It’s your lucky day… I’m here to HELP!

Firstly, “congratulations” on your engagement! It’s the start of a new eventful chapter in your life, so let me help you to start it the best way possible. You may think, “I won’t have enough time before the big day” or “I have too much  happening already” but actually, that’s what I want to hear from you! Let’s think about how long you’ve got until that walk down the aisle…

If your wedding day is about 12 months away then this gives you plenty of time to prepare and reach your goals.

Firstly you must start your clean healthy diet: cut out fast food and un-healthy snacking and replace them with healthy ‘step ins.’ So instead of having a chocolate bar grab some fruit or maybe a handful of nuts. Meal time is crucial even a year before your wedding, you must start to prepare your body mentally and physically by eating smaller healthier portions. So how about those few last days leading up to the wedding?

Put simply, some foods are better than others if  you want to minimize your food intake but not starve. Eating the correct foods give you the healthy full feeling. Eat super foods such as berries, avocado, cinnamon, turkey and beans – just some of  great super foods that are a must in your new diet and crucial to the days leading up to the wedding.  So here’s a little plan of what you should and shouldn’t eat on the build up to your big day…

What to avoid…

Day/Night Before – ‘heavy’ meals e.g. steak, potatoes. Also, anything seafood, alcohol, late night snacks and fast food.

Wedding Day– Junk food, deep fried food, yeasty bread, heavy meats e.g. steak, gammon.

What I recommend eating…

Day/Night Before – A healthy lunch/dinner, salad, pastas, stir-fry veg etc.

Wedding Day – Fruit, cereal, coffee for breakfast, sandwiches, water during the day… well if you can!
